Workshop Description:
Learn to paint flowers with different sumi-e techniques with Joan Lok. The morning session will introduce the fundamentals of sumi-e using refined contours, painting delicate cherry blossoms. Joan will discuss the anatomy of the flower, lines for various features, and different stages of the blossom from buds to full bloom. The afternoon session will paint beautiful poppies in expressive brushwork. Joan will explain the anatomy of the flower, how to load the brush with multiple colors, and how to handle the tip of the brush to create a whole petal in a single stroke. Update on the supply list:
The "Greenline" Paper listed on the supply list is a brand of rice paper in the "Sumi-e starter kit" noted on the supply list and offered by Paragon Art Supply. (There's no "Green Line" on the paper. It's just a brand name.) The artist can order this set or use rice paper from other sources.
Registrants can use any kind of unsized rice paper. Most rice paper comes as "unsized". (If it is "sized", the supplier will state that.) Any kind of rice paper will work in my sumi-e workshop. You can find unsized rice paper on Amazon and sumi-e suppliers, like Paragon Art, OAS, Blue Heron, SumieStore, or even general suppliers, like Plaza Arts https://www.plazaart.com/sumi-e-painting-and-calligraphy-paper-sketch-pad-12x18 .
If the artists want to be specific - they can ask for Double Xuen, Double Shuen, Pi, or Ma. A specialized sumi-e supplier will know what they are looking for.

Note to students:
Like professional watercolor brushes, professional sumi-e painting brushes can be pricey. Joan spoke to the supplier of a Sumi-e Painting Start Kit, and he will offer it at 50% off (regular price $68, now 50% off at $34). The Sumi Start Kit for classes consists of:
If you would like to try your hands on sumi-e before investing on brushes, just bring your watercolor rounds in 6, 8, 10, 12 and a detail (00 or 1), as listed in the watercolorist alternatives in the supply list. |
