Class Description:

Join us for a two-day adventure into the wild, untamed beauty of Florida’s landscapes, inspired by the bold and energetic style of the famous Florida Highwaymen artists! In this workshop, you’ll learn how to capture the essence of palm-lined shores, fiery sunsets, and lush wetlands using expressive line work, dynamic composition, and rich tonal contrasts.

Students should bring collected photo images that will be used as references. They may event want to try bringing photos that can be cut into pieces to make a funky collage they can work from.

(Pictures are examples of Michael's art, not what students will do in class.)

What You’ll Learn:

Day 1: Master sketching techniques to quickly capture the movement of swaying palms, coastal breezes, and Florida’s unique light. Experiment with charcoal, ink, and bold strokes to create vibrant, high-energy drawings.

Day 2: Develop a finished piece that embodies the spirit of Old Florida, layering in atmospheric depth, dramatic skies, and textured landscapes that pay homage to the legendary Highwaymen artists.

Perfect for all skill levels, this workshop blends history, nature, and artistic expression—whether you're a Florida native or just love its funky, tropical vibe!

Supply list (updated):  Students will need to bring a pad of drawing paper, at least 16" X 20", a support board for the drawing paper, and drawing pencils.  Other drawing materials students can bring if they feel comfortable with using them can include charcoal, technical ink pens and color pencils.  Students should also bring scissors, Elmer's glue, resource photo materials as described above, a mounting board, old matt boards, or strong illustration boards if you want to glue the collage in place as a picture.
