Class Description:

Welcome to our fun and friendly 6-week drawing class! Here's a simple overview of what we'll be doing each week:

Week 1: Getting to Know Drawing Tools and Basic Shapes
  • We'll explore different drawing materials and how to use them.
  • Practice drawing simple shapes and learn how to place them on your page.
  • Focus on using lines to show depth, making front objects stand out with darker lines and background objects with lighter lines.
(Pictures are examples of Michael's art, not what students will do in class.)

Week 2: Bringing Drawings to Life with Shading
  • Add shading to your shapes to make them look more 3D.
  • Experiment with lighting to see how it changes the mood of your drawings.
  • Learn about light and shadow, including terms like core shadow, highlight, and cast shadow.

Week 3: Drawing More Complex Objects and Composing Your Art
  • Tackle more detailed subjects by breaking them down into basic shapes.
  • Discuss how to arrange your drawings nicely on the page, considering space and balance.
  • Try quick "thumbnail sketches" to plan your drawings before starting the main piece.

Week 4: Creating Focus and Interest in Your Drawings
  • Learn how to use different shapes and textures to draw attention to certain areas.
  • Understand why placing the main subject off-center can make your drawing more appealing.
  • Keep practicing all the techniques we've covered so far.

Week 5: Drawing Natural Subjects and Adding Depth
  • Start drawing things like fabric, plants, or leather.
  • Use shading and focus techniques to make some parts of your drawing look closer and others further away.
  • Begin a final project that's a bit bigger and more detailed, which we'll finish in the last class.

Week 6: Finishing Up and Celebrating Your Progress
  • Complete your final project and add any finishing touches.
  • Look back at your work to see how much you've improved.
  • Celebrate your hard work and achievements with a fun gathering!
Throughout the course, we'll build your drawing skills in a supportive and enjoyable environment. Let's have fun creating art together!

Supply List:  Students will need to bring a pad of drawing paper, at least 14" X 17", a support board as large as the pad (can be as low-tech as a piece of foam board or as high tech as a drawing board with clips and a rubber band), a set of drawing pencils, a kneaded eraser, and a pencil sharpener.
