Pointed-Brush Calligraphy with Linda McVicar
Class Description: Discover the fluid elegance of script lettering using a pointed brush in this hands-on workshop led by longtime calligraphy instructor Linda McVicar. You’ll learn the essential foundational strokes—up and down, under-curve, compound curve—and how to apply pressure and release to create expressive thick-and-thin letterforms. Along the way, you’ll explore basic calligraphy terminology, spacing, alignment, and layout techniques suited for both paper and mixed-media surfaces. By the end of the class you’ll produce a polished word or short phrase of your own design, and walk away with the confidence and skills to continue pointed-brush lettering at home. Who should attend: This class is ideal for beginners or artists familiar with broad edge tools who want to explore a brush approach, and for anyone eager to add expressive, brush-lettered script to journals, cards or artwork. Bring if you have them: A quality pointed brush (approximate size 6-10) with good snap. Golden Taklon is best, but a nylon aquabrush works well also. In addition, ink or fluid acrylic, smooth practice paper, ruler and pencil. (Supplies can be loaned or recommended if you’re new to the tool.) |
