Class Description:
Learn the art of pen and ink with watercolor washes! Pen and ink with watercolor painting seems a bit contradictory, because it combines the preciseness of creating a drawing using fine lines with a more relaxed approach to watercolor painting. In truth, the watercolor painting techniques employed in pen and watercolor washes requires some precision as well, but after doing the detailed work of creating an image, the feeling of spreading water and paint on a page feels like freedom. Conversely, starting with a wash means that the drawing stage that follows is a lot like creating order out of chaos. Either way you work, the process promises to feel as rewarding as the results you achieve. In this series Frank Zampardi will show you how to draw and paint using pen and ink with watercolors; you'll learn how to create gradient color in both wet-into-wet washes and with pen; then see the various ways in which watercolor washes can be combined with pen and ink for intricately drawn details offset by soft, beautiful color. You will experience how to mix pen and watercolor together, balancing intricate, drawn details with soft washes to create beautiful landscape paintings and still lifes. You’ll learn basic lessons on pen strokes, brushstrokes and painting techniques, then progress to learn how to paint buildings with weathered wood, capture bright highlights, and create stormy skies. In the animal workshops you'll learn how to harness the ink to create intricate textures and details, or how to use the ink to make dynamic paintings with movement and spontaneous splashes. Class Description:
Please bring a table covering, apron to protect your clothing, a water container, tissues, rags for drying brushes, and gloves (optional). Day One: Participants will learn to stretch silk, apply resist and paint the silk using the French Serti method. The difference between dyes and paints will be discussed as well as a demonstration of various painting techniques and materials. A silk handkerchief 11” by 11” will be completed. Instructions will be given on mounting this silk on to a canvas as an independent activity. Day Two: Participants will use their new silk painting skills by painting a silk scarf. A choice of designs will be offered. Of course each artist may choose their own color palette to create their unique art worthy of wearing proudly or gift giving. |
Sandy was an art teacher for over 20 years and experimented with many different art techniques and materials. It wasn’t until 1985 when she studied painting on silk at The School of Visual Arts in New York City that she found her preferred media. She loved watching the vibrant silk dyes and paints flow, mix and glide across the smooth surface of the silk. She is always experimenting with new techniques and using her painted silks in three dimensional art and mixed media creations
