Class Description:  .
Collage is an expansive mixed-media painting process that can stand on it's own or be a valuable addition to our watercolor or acrylic paintings.  This series of classes will build your knowledge of how to make and utilize collage materials from the very simplest materials and beyond.  Learn how to seamlessly blend collage papers with an existing painting or drawing and learn how to use collage to save a painting with which you are unhappy.

Class One - Collage As Underpainting: Using simple, common materials, learn to make interesting collage papers and create backgrounds for your paintings that add excitement to any subject.
Class Two - Merging Neutrals and Bold Color: Have a painting you feel is missing something or do you have a sketch or drawing you wish you could make into a painting?  Collage to the rescue!  Students must bring either a drawing/sketch or painting of his/her creation to class.  We will focus on how to choose the papers that make your piece sing; along with learning more fun collage paper making techniques.

Instructor will provide a canvas board 11” X 14” or 12” X 16” (student’s painting/drawing must be smaller) along with found-collage materials, simple items to make additional collage papers, stamps, stencils and a supply of other materials needed to create your mixed-media painting.

Students are asked to bring the following to class:
  • His/her acrylic or watercolor paints and brushes.
  • Watercolor pencils or water-soluble crayons or markers (optional, only bring if you have them).
  • Permanent Pens like Micron Pigma or Sharpie or Pitt Pens, varied tip thickness is useful
  • Brayer (only if you have one).
  • Matte Medium or YES Paste, whichever you have on hand.
  • Soft Gel or Gel Gloss Medium, only if you have one of these on hand – instructor has plenty to share.
  • Gelli Plate (if you have one).
  • Your favorite stamps and/or stencils (optional, only bring if you have them).
  • Water bucket, apron, plastic tablecloth, scissors, squeegee (like an old credit card) and paper towels.
  • Any collage papers you have on hand to get things started, along with white tissue paper and/or deli paper, and/or found neutral papers – magazine postcards, hand-written notes, old sheet music, pages from old books, Xerox copies of hand-written letters or post cards or old printouts, interesting junk mail, etc.

Class Three - Collage, Pattern & Texture: Paintings that are lacking sex-appeal often need a bit of pattern and/or texture.  Collage is a great way to add that zest.  This class requires you have a painting or two of your own that you want to alter.  Explore fun, new ways to make exciting papers and learn how to select and apply them to your painting.

Class Four - Painting Makeover with Collage: Pull out those paintings or sketches you've been wanting to do something with and bring them to this class.  Learn a number of ways you can solve the issue with your painting through collage.  The majority of our time will be spent assessing and altering your painting so bring any collage papers you have on hand to get things started.

Class Description:
Learn the art of pen and ink with watercolor washes!

Pen and ink with watercolor painting seems a bit contradictory, because it combines the preciseness of creating a drawing using fine lines with a more relaxed approach to watercolor painting. In truth, the watercolor painting techniques employed in pen and watercolor washes requires some precision as well, but after doing the detailed work of creating an image, the feeling of spreading water and paint on a page feels like freedom. Conversely, starting with a wash means that the drawing stage that follows is a lot like creating order out of chaos. Either way you work, the process promises to feel as rewarding as the results you achieve.

In this series Frank Zampardi will show you how to draw and paint using pen and ink with watercolors;  you'll learn how to create gradient color in both wet-into-wet washes and with pen; then see the various ways in which watercolor washes can be combined with pen and ink for intricately drawn details offset by soft, beautiful color.

You will experience how to mix pen and watercolor together, balancing intricate, drawn details with soft washes to create beautiful landscape paintings and still lifes. You’ll learn basic lessons on pen strokes, brushstrokes and painting techniques, then progress to learn how to paint buildings with weathered wood, capture bright highlights, and create stormy skies.  In the animal workshops you'll learn how to harness the ink to create intricate textures and details, or how to use the ink to make dynamic paintings with movement and spontaneous splashes.

Scarf Design
Sandy was an art teacher for over 20 years and experimented with many different art techniques and materials. It wasn’t until 1985 when she studied painting on silk at  The School of Visual Arts in New York City that she found her preferred media. She loved watching the vibrant silk dyes and paints flow, mix and glide across the smooth surface of the silk.  She is always experimenting with new techniques and using her painted silks in three dimensional art and mixed media creations
