Class Description:

If you’d like to draw beautiful realistic looking portraits of your favorite people, this class shows you how to do it. 

In this “multi-media” portrait drawing class, students will learn:
  • How to create realistic portraits from photographs and student models
  • How to use grids for accuracy
  • The four step process for creating a portrait
  • How to use gradual blending-the key to realistic portraits
  • Five shading elements
  • How to use “sight measuring” 
  • How to see values by squinting
  • How to find the subject’s axis
  • How to find the subject’s head tilt
  • How to “capture” subtle facial curvature accurately
  • How to draw natural looking facial features
  • How to draw facial features and their placement
  • Use of proper lighting

In addition, students will learn fundamental shading techniques in developing successful drawings.

This class is recommended for the intermediate and higher skilled student.  You choose your own medium(s) and are responsible for obtaining the materials necessary for that medium.  However, intermediate students are encouraged to think of graphite as a first choice, and students that choose graphite will be provided with a supply list.  If there are any other materials needed, they will be provided in class.
