Get into the holiday spirit with a fun and colorful morning or afternoon of watercolor batik with Kathy Mantel! Join Kathy at Village Art Workshops for a creative holiday experience where you’ll combine watercolor, rice paper and melted wax to create your own collection of whimsical, one-of-a-kind holiday cards.

Choose from two sessions, each featuring a different collection of playful holiday designs. Kathy will guide you through her watercolor batik process as you layer brilliant watercolor, preserve areas with melted wax, and build the wonderful textures, broken edges and unexpected effects that make batik so distinctive.

Once your paintings are complete, they’ll become handmade holiday cards ready to share with family and friends—or keep because you like them too much to give away!

Workshops fill quickly—secure your spot early

A collection of colorful, one-of-a-kind holiday cards created with Kathy’s watercolor batik process—and a technique you can continue using to create cards and small works of art on your own.  You’ll also leave with experience in:

​

  • Painting watercolor on rice paper

  • Layering watercolor and melted wax

  • Using wax as a resist to preserve color and build the design

  • Creating the wonderful textures and broken effects characteristic of watercolor batik

  • Adding expressive linework, splatter and finishing details

  • This workshop is for all skill levels, including watercolor painters who have never tried batik before. Kathy will demonstrate the process step by step, making this a fun introduction for beginners while giving experienced painters a completely different way to work with watercolor.

Kathy provides the specialty materials and equipment needed for the batik process:

  • Rice paper

  • Cards and envelopes

  • Wax pans

  • Irons

​

  • Students bring their regular watercolor supplies.

  • 9:00-12:00 OR 1:00-4:00

  • Fee: $79 for either session

Kathy Mantel is a familiar face at Village Art Workshops and a popular instructor known for her colorful, whimsical approach to watercolor batik. Her work combines watercolor, rice paper, wax, expressive line and plenty of personality, creating paintings that are loose, lively and unmistakably her own.

Kathy guides students through the batik process step by step in a relaxed, encouraging atmosphere, making an unusual technique approachable and fun for painters at a variety of experience levels.
