Who This is For

This workshop is perfect for watercolor painters who want to loosen up, experiment with color, and create something festive without worrying about making every brushstroke perfect.
You don't need to be able to draw the poinsettias — a tracing will be provided — so you can spend your time painting, experimenting, and learning.
Some watercolor experience will be helpful, but you certainly don't need to be an advanced painter.

Schedule

Day One — Drizzle, Play & Experiment

We'll trace and drizzle the quarter-sheet poinsettia painting first so it has plenty of time to dry.
Then we'll turn our attention to the three smaller watercolor cards. You'll experiment with different poinsettia colors and combinations while learning the painting techniques you'll use on the larger piece.
By the end of the day, you'll have three original holiday cards — and you'll know exactly which direction you want to take your larger painting.

Day Two — The Big Painting

Now we put it all together.
Using your favorite discoveries from the previous day's color studies, we'll paint the quarter-sheet poinsettia from beginning to end, working through the flowers, centers, berries, background, color balance, and finishing touches.

Wanda Boyd is a watercolor and acrylic artist, instructor, and owner of Village Art Workshops. Her classes focus on making painting understandable and approachable while giving students plenty of room to experiment and make a project their own.

Wanda especially enjoys teaching the why behind a painting — why one value works against another, why a color combination sings (or doesn't), and why sometimes the best thing you can do with watercolor is stop trying quite so hard to control it.
