Workshop Description:
Painting the human likeness can be the ultimate challenge for an artist. But it can also be the most rewarding experience when you get it right! Join Karen in a 3-day workshop that breaks down the complexity of the face into a series of smaller, achievable learning exercises. At the end of the workshop, you’ll leave with the confidence and tools to paint any face. Day 1: We start at the very beginning. Blend skin tones, understand how lighting interacts with facial planes, and master the details of each facial feature. Day 2: Using a limited palette, you will paint a “quick portrait” that only takes 3 layers and a few hours to complete. (Great for gifts, and as studies for larger portraits.) |
ay 3: Building on what you’ve done in Days 1 & 2, we go bigger and add more layers and details - backgrounds, fabric and hands- putting it all together to create expressive, glowing watercolors that tells your viewers a story.
Karen uses an iPad as her reference. The workshop includes tech tips on how to easily use a digital reference to be more analytical and creative with your reference and your work. Pre-class Preparation: • Prior to class, you will receive a hand-out that explains how to best select a good photo reference and best prepare for the workshop. |
• About 4 weeks before the workshop, Karen will host an online meet-and-greet for all registered participants. It’s a chance for her find out more about your goals for the workshop and better personalize your experience. As well, it’s a time for you to ask questions and prepare for the class.
After the workshop: Workshops are a great way to improve your skills, but a lot of information is provided in a limited amount of time. To ensure that her students retain the information gained during the week, Karen provides you with some additional tools you can use after class. • Return home with a complete printed reference summarizing the content covered during the week together, including narrated video links of Karen demonstrating the techniques shown in the workshop. • Included in the workshop is a private final critique. Within the month following the workshop – after you have time to review and practice at your own pace - email an image of a completed work, and Karen will return a printed critique with tips on how to keep improving.
