Class Description:
Are you frustrated with not knowing what to do best in your drawings or painting?  Do you know how to use color?  Do you know how to create strong focal points?  You may know something is "not right" but don't know what it is.

If you want answers to these concerns, questions and more, this class will show you the way.

The class focuses on the elements and principals of design and their application in creating original artwork.  These guidelines are the "building blocks" used in successful compositions.  The elements are the things that make up drawings, paintings, etc., and the principles are how you arrange them.

Using basic design lessons from student reference materials, students will learn a repeatable process in wet or dry mediums in "how to" edit and arrange pictorial elements using design principles in various tried and true compositional formats. You will no longer be a slave to your reference material.  The beauty of this plan is that it is applicable to any medium and subject, including portraiture.

Selected elements, principles and formats will be executed in smaller scale designs, in the students' chosen medium.  Students will take the best design to use for their finished piece.  Students will also learn about value studies and thumbnail sketches and the importance of those tools for successful compositional designs resulting in a stronger finished piece.

Supply list: Students will need to bring materials necessary to work in their chosen medium. There will be a few other inexpensive items that the instructor will provide upon receipt of your registration.
