"Anyone can take a beautiful photograph and create a mediocre painting.  It takes REAL skill to take a mediocre photograph and create a beautiful painting.  How to see the charm and artistry in the ordinary -- that's what you'll learn in Lionel's class!" - Wanda B.

Class Description:
Lionel's love of painting, combined with his love of teaching, will provide students with a wonderful opportunity to learn watercolor techniques. Lionel has a calm, assured teaching style that soothes anxious students and makes learning easy and fun. Lionel teaches in the traditional manner, guiding students in watercolor painting "from start to finish."  If you want to make leaps and bounds in your watercolor work, this is the class for you!

Students will learn how to:
  • pick the best reference material
  • do quick thumbnail sketches
  • plan out the best composition
  • transfer the thumbnail sketch to the watercolor paper
  • choose the best paint colors
  • use the best watercolor technique for each part of the painting

Lionel's classes can be standalone; however, he does build on watercolor skillsets from one class to another so we recommend standalone classes for those who are more experienced painters.  Here is the progression of classwork:
All pictures are representational
May 11, class 1:  Lionel will cover drawing, perspective, creating a center of interest, color mixing, and how to get the ratio of the drawing in proportion to the ratio of the watercolor paper.  This is the foundational class, and you will be doing several small studies.  If you haven't taken from Lionel before, you'll want to take this class.

May 18 and May 25, classes 2 and 3:  Lionel will show how to do a thumbnail sketch and then a value study using three values with one color.  He will talk about creating interest in the painting by adding or subtracting elements.  We will start a painting on May 18 and finish it on May 25.  In the second class Lionel will discuss balance, working in threes, tying the painting together, accent marks and calligraphy. You may take these two classes together as a set without taking other classes.

June 1 and June 8, classes 4 and 5:  Lionel will cover the same lesson plans as in classes two and three, but with a different subject.  Students will start the painting in class 4 and finish it in class 5.  You may take these two classes together as a set without taking the other classes.

June 15, class 6:  This class will be one painting from start to finish.  Because it is being done in one class, the subject will be simplified, but the students will need to paint a bit faster.  A student can take this class without taking the other classes.
