Class Description:
Tom will start the workshop by explaining and discussing the five principal keys that make for a strong painting: drawing and composition, values, edges, color, and paint manipulation.
Tom likes to teach painting directly and indirectly with oil paints, although students may paint in acrylic if that is their preference.
Tom will focus most on painting directly, or alla prima -- "all in one sitting" -- since it requires less drying time for a two day workshop. It is a much faster and immediate way of painting, with the painting often finished in one sitting or session. When painting directly, the artist strives to find the right hue, value, and saturation of the color before laying it down on the canvas in order to get the color and shape down correctly the first time.
However, Tom will also demonstrate indirect painting, which is how a painting can be taken even further by working indirectly or in layers, after each layer has dried, through glazing and scumbling. This will give the students confidence to go home and work further on a piece that perhaps didn't reach its full potential in the first sitting.
Tom will show that any painting starting with a good composition should be able to be resolved successfully with indirect painting.
Students can anticipate completing one or perhaps two paintings during this workshop. Students can paint from their own photograph or one from Tom's collection.
