Class Description:
.Lionel's love of painting, combined with his love of teaching, will provide students with a wonderful opportunity to learn watercolor techniques. Lionel has a calm, assured teaching style that soothes anxious students and makes learning easy and fun. Lionel teaches in the traditional manner, guiding students in watercolor painting "from start to finish." If you want to make leaps and bounds in your watercolor work, this is the class for you!
Students will learn how to:
Lionel's classes can be standalone; however, he does build on watercolor skillsets from one class to another so we recommend standalone classes for those that are more experienced painters. Here is the progression of classwork:
Class 1 will include discussion on linear and aerial perspective. This is where you learn how to draw a barn or house and how to layer trees and bushes to create depth in your painting. A simple painting will be done.
Class 2 will include a discussion on drawing; also, high contrast and focal points will be discussed. Lionel will instruct student on the use of the color wheel and the water to paint ratio. A painting will be done utilizing skills learned from the discussion.
Class 3 will be a painting done in monochromatic colors.
Class 4 will be a painting done in low key colors.
Class 5 will be a painting done in high key colors.
Class 6 will be a rural landscape painting done with a full palette of colors.
Class 7 will be a painting done on Yupo paper.
Class 8 will be a painting done in pen and ink, then painted with light watercolor washes.

- do quick thumbnail sketches
- plan out the best composition
- transfer the thumbnail sketch to the watercolor paper
- choose the best paint colors
- use the best watercolor technique for each part of the painting
