Workshop Description:
Join internationally renowned watercolorist Sterling Edwards for a three-day Live Zoom Class as he shows you three different approaches to producing a watercolor painting. Each class is five hours long with a one-hour lunch break. All the classes begin at 10:00 am Eastern Time. Everyone will break for lunch from noon until 1:00 pm. Student painting time is from 2:00 pm until 4:00 pm.

In each of Sterling’s classes he will do a complete painting with detailed explanation in the mornings that will take approximately two hours. There will also be a brief break or two in the morning sessions.

Following lunch, students can paint anything that they wish and any size that they feel comfortable painting. Sterling will be available to help on an as requested basis.

These workshops are for all skill levels, however; previous watercolor and drawing skills are always beneficial. In every one of the classes, you will see a multitude of creative watercolor techniques including, saving white paper, creating a strong composition, negative painting, glazing color, introducing rich darks to create drama in your paintings, creative brush techniques, color mixing, working wet into wet, controlling edge quality, and so much more.

See for yourself why Sterling Edwards is one of the most sought after watercolor instructors in the U.S and abroad.

Each participant will also receive a link to download the class for future reference. This allows each participant to practice at a more leisurely pace.

Workshop Description:
For "Master the Mist" -- capture the magic and mood of pines enveloped in soft mist as we explore techniques to create soft and lost edges.  By understanding how water reacts on the paper and how to prepare the paper properly, misty effects happen naturally - without scrubbing and lifting.  Participants will also learn to create beautiful skies as well as trees that look natural versus mechanical looking trees one might create with too much brushwork.  If that's not enough, we can also include some techniques using a sponge, palette knife, how to suggest waves, create birch with a variety of textures, and sun rays!  You'll all sleep well after this class.

For "Three Shades of Gray:  Light, Middle & Dark Values" -- Not 50 Shades of Gray!  . . . that might be too exciting.  We'll show our passion through the magic of watercolor.  In this class, we'll plan out our colored masterpiece by first painting a value-painting.  Through the process we will learn to simplify a subject into it's basic shapes and the multitude of values into three.  We'll unify the painting with light washes and connect individual shapes by linking them through subsequent stages.  Negative painting and "keeping the bead" are other concepts emphasized.

Workshop Description:
Beginning with collaging neutral fiber papers onto watercolor paper, the students will add a wire drawing (a drawing that is done with a permanent marker and looks like a wire sculpture). Students will complete the painting using watercolor. The second painting will involve students painting a floral of their choice and adding wire drawing. This is Karen’s very favorite thing to do! When learning to “wire draw”, wrong lines are actually good.

Wire drawing helps you to become a better artist. So, if you struggle with your drawing, this is the class for you! Design tips will be shared, along with color tips. Karen gives lots of individual attention, and believes that painting should be fun and easy.

Representational reference paintings:
Workshop Description:
Do you find yourself picking up those small brushes too soon?  Do you wish you could see more and different colors in your images?  Do some colors scare you?  Do you always intend to loose some edges but then find your finished paintings very tight?

Attendees will work on expanding their color palette and then applying what they learn to working from photographs.

A good drawing is the critical foundation to any painting.  For example, in a portrait, a viewer has an expectation of facial structure; differences from that expectation impact how the viewer sees the work.  In a landscape or still life, the viewer has expectations of perspective.  With a good drawing, the artist can be creative with other techniques.

Attendees will work on creating focus, simplifying, and using the photograph as a starting point to explore color and lose edges.  We will work on finding centers of interest and focusing our detail in the area of the center of interest.

We will also work on creating color unity, painting large areas of light and dark, creating backgrounds and losing edges and using color to create interest and emotion.

Color creates emotion and can focus the viewer.  Deconstructed color and unexpected colors excite and engage the viewer.  Attendees will explore color properties -- mixing colors to maintain clarity, using complementary colors to focus and create excitement, and exploring colors in highlights and shadows.

Attendees will apply what they have learned about drawing and color and work from their photograph.  We will explore what makes a good photograph to work from and how to crop the photograph to create interest and emotion for the viewer.  We will also work on composition and discuss improving our composition.

While Kathy may demo a portrait or figurative work, the attendees may also paint subjects other than portraits.

Day 1 – Color
Day 2 – Composition
Day 3 – Figurative / portrait

Each registrant receives one month access to an on-line recording of the workshop.
